The Swindon Society

The Swindon Society

From its very beginnings the Society has attempted to record the social history of the area as shown by the camera since the 1850's.

The collection contains photographic material on many subjects including the GWR Swindon, Swindon Tramway system, Wilts & Berks Canal, Swindon in both World Wars, school groups, areas of the town including Old Town, Gorse Hill, Rodbourne, surrounding villages and much more.

The collection now numbers 15,000 plus images and is used to illustrate presentations to local groups.

To keep abreast of technology, the Society has recently digitised the slide collection and continue to add to the collection. Should you have any photographs, post cards or programmes and are willing for the Society to copy and add to the collection, please contact Bob Townsend on (01793) 845295.

Members meetings are held on the second Wednesday of the month from September to May inclusive.

Meetings are held at Goddard Park School, Welcombe Avenue, Park North, Swindon SN3 2QN, commencing at 7.30pm.

The meetings take the form of image presentations by members or visiting speakers. Members entry fee is 50p, visitors £3.00 and this includes light refreshments. Our final meeting of the season usually consists of an annual outing and this normally takes place in June.
